BENTON HARBOR, Mich. – Â黨ÐÇ¿Õmv is among the community collegesÌýparticipatingÌýin theÌýFuturesÌýforÌýFrontlinersÌýprogram unveiledÌýtodayÌýby Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.Ìý
The scholarship program offersÌýfree tuition toÌýMichiganders who worked in essential industriesÌýduring the height of the COVID-19 pandemicÌýshutdown.ÌýIt covers the cost of associate degrees,ÌýcertificatesÌýand high school equivalency exams.ÌýÌý
The programÌýaims toÌýincrease theÌýnumberÌýof skilled workers inÌýtheÌýstate andÌýhelp essential workers earn higher wages.ÌýOn average, workers with aÌýtwo-year degreeÌýearnÌý$7,500ÌýmoreÌýannually. Seventy-fiveÌýpercentÌýof Michigan jobs require education beyond high school.Ìý

EssentialÌýworkers in Michigan without a college degree or high school equivalency who worked at least half-time in 11 of 13 weeks from April 1 through June 30 are eligibleÌýforÌýthe program. This includesÌýemployeesÌýwho staffed grocery stores and restaurants, provided waste management services, manufactured Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), operated public transportation, or provided critical police or fire services, among others.ÌýÌý
Those without a high school diploma or equivalency are eligibleÌýforÌýadditionalÌýservices to help them prepareÌýforÌýand completeÌýtheir GED before goingÌýon to a community college or job training program.ÌýÌý
Scholarship applications areÌýcurrentlyÌýbeing accepted throughÌýDec. 31. Once acceptedÌýinto the program,Ìýfrontline workers can enroll inÌýspring semesterÌýclassesÌýwhich begin onÌýJanuaryÌý19,Ìý2021.Ìý
