What is Academic Advising?

Advisors are more than class schedulers — we’re your partners in academic confidence and college navigation. In your advising meetings, we will:

Plan Your Degree & Program – Understand your requirements and map the best path to graduation.
Build Class Schedules – Create schedules that fit your goals and your life.
Explore Majors & Goals – Talk through your interests, strengths, and career options.
Check In for Success – Meet regularly to stay on track, adjust plans, and keep moving forward.
Connect You to Resources – Link you to tutoring, financial aid, career services, and more.

Tip: Don’t wait until there’s a problem. Check in with your advisor early and often!

How to Meet with an Advisor

Appointments – Current students can schedule an appointment through the ��in Student Profile.

Drop-In Advising (Fall 2025) –

August 25 – September 9, Monday–Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Benton Harbor and South Haven campuses.
Drop-ins are first-come, first-served and NO appointments will be available during this time (including through the Advising Appointment Scheduler).

Important for Fall 2025 Students: If you still need to register for Fall classes, you must come to Drop-In Advising. Once classes begin on September 2, 2025, instructor permission will be required to add any course.

New Student Orientation

Fall Students: You’ll receive an email with instructions to register for a New Student Orientation session over the summer. Orientation is required before meeting with an advisor and registering for classes. Click here to learn more about Orientation.
Spring or Summer Students: If you have not yet completed Online Orientation, please do so before meeting with your advisor.

When to Meet With Your Advisor In Your First Year

Summer (Orientation)

Register for Fall classes during Orientation or over the summer.
(Some high school students may register in Spring during on-site high school registrations.)
Schedule your next advising appointment for the first or second week of October (after midterm grades).

October / November Check-In

Review how the semester is going.
Connect with resources if needed.
Register for Spring classes.
Schedule your next advising appointment for after March 1.

March / April Check-In (for Summer and beyond)

Discuss Summer courses (if not already done during Spring registration).
Evaluate academic progress.
Open year-long scheduling (Fall/Spring/Summer). If on track, register for all upcoming terms.

What to Do Before Your Advising Appointment

Apply for Admission – Submit your admissions application.
Submit Transcripts – Send official high school and/or college transcripts to LMC before your advising appointment. Transfer students should have official transcripts evaluated to get the most out of their advising session.
Prepare Questions & Goals – Think about your academic and career goals so your advisor can help create the best plan for you.

Current Students

We recommend meeting with your advisor at least once a year to stay on track. Schedule an appointment if you need to:

Register for courses
Add or drop a class
Withdraw from a course
Review or update your academic plan
