Bernard C. Radde Distinguished Service Award: Janice Varney
Janice Varney received the Bernard C. Radde Distinguished Service Award in 2015.听
As the first Executive Dean of 麻花星空mv in South Haven, Janice Varney听led the new campus to become an integral and vital part of the community. LMC Trustee听and South Haven resident Steven Small said, 鈥淚t is Janice who is largely responsible for this听community鈥檚 embracing LMC.鈥
鈥淚n 2003, the residents of South Haven entrusted LMC with the responsibility to deliver听to them high-quality college education,鈥 said President Robert Harrison. 鈥淛anice took on听our ambitions for the area and made them her own. She has and deserves the respect of听everyone at the college.鈥
Janice served as board president of the South Haven Chamber of Commerce for six years,听worked with South Haven鈥檚 Rotary Club to establish a $100,000 endowment for LMC听scholarships, and represented the college on the Brownfield Redevelopment and Local听Development Finance Authorities. After her retirement from LMC, she has continued to serve听on the South Haven Community Foundation, the Saugatuck Center for the Arts, and the听Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy. She is currently working with community members听to establish a South Haven Speaker鈥檚 Series. She was recently awarded the 2014 South听Haven Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award, one of many such honors.听
LMC Trustee Dr. David Maysick believes that Janice鈥檚 role could not have been filled by听anyone else. 鈥淔ar more people know of our college in that area and beyond because of听her than would if any other 鈥榥ormal鈥 person had had her job. I do not think it is possible to听measure her impact for LMC on that community,鈥 he said.
